What's Happening?
Embraer and Mahindra Group are advancing discussions and planning for an industrial and support ecosystem for the C-390 Millennium military transport aircraft in India. This initiative is part of their joint pursuit of the Indian Air Force (IAF) Medium
Transport Aircraft (MTA) program. The companies have identified Nagpur, India, as a potential location for a Final Assembly Line for the C-390 Millennium. This proposed facility would facilitate local assembly and industrialization of the aircraft within India, contingent on the C-390 Millennium being selected by the Government of India and an order being placed under the IAF’s MTA program. Embraer and Mahindra are collaborating with the Government of Maharashtra to ensure the necessary industrial infrastructure can be developed swiftly if the program is awarded to their partnership. Bosco da Costa Junior, President & CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, emphasized the importance of Nagpur as a potential location for building a robust aerospace ecosystem in India. Vinod Sahay, Member of the Group Executive Board, Mahindra Group, reiterated Mahindra's commitment to developing a globally competitive aerospace ecosystem in India.
Why It's Important?
This proposed collaboration between Embraer and Mahindra holds significant implications for India's aerospace and defense capabilities, aligning with the Government of India's 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' objectives. By establishing a local assembly line, India aims to reduce its reliance on foreign imports for military transport aircraft, fostering indigenous manufacturing and technological expertise. The project would leverage Embraer’s aerospace engineering and manufacturing knowledge alongside Mahindra’s established industrial ecosystem, potentially creating numerous jobs and stimulating economic growth in the region, particularly in Nagpur. For Embraer, securing this contract would expand its global footprint and strengthen its position in the international defense market. For Mahindra, it represents a substantial opportunity to enhance its capabilities in the aerospace sector and contribute to national defense. The success of this partnership could also pave the way for future collaborations and investments in India's burgeoning aerospace industry, attracting more foreign direct investment and technology transfer.
What's Next?
The immediate next step for Embraer and Mahindra is to continue engaging with the Government of India, the Indian aerospace ecosystem, and the Government of Maharashtra to progress preparations for the program. The establishment of the C-390 Millennium assembly line in Nagpur is contingent upon the aircraft's selection by the Government of India for the IAF's MTA program and the subsequent placement of an order. If selected, the partnership intends to progressively integrate Indian aerospace companies into the C-390 Millennium ecosystem, covering manufacturing, aftermarket services, training, and lifecycle support. The companies also announced plans in February 2026 to work towards establishing a C-390 Millennium Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) capability in India, also subject to the aircraft's selection. The ongoing discussions and preparatory activities indicate a strong commitment from both companies to move forward should the Indian government choose the C-390 Millennium.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate economic and defense implications, this potential partnership signifies a deeper strategic alignment between a global aerospace leader and a major Indian conglomerate. It underscores a growing trend of international defense manufacturers seeking to localize production in key markets, driven by national security imperatives and economic development goals. The transfer of advanced aerospace technology and manufacturing know-how to India could have long-term effects on the country's industrial base, fostering a skilled workforce and potentially leading to the development of new indigenous aerospace innovations. This collaboration could also serve as a model for future defense procurement, emphasizing co-production and technology transfer rather than outright purchases. The C-390 Millennium, with its multi-mission capabilities, could significantly enhance India's disaster response, humanitarian aid, and logistical support capabilities, contributing to regional stability and security.
