What's Happening?
TAP Air Portugal is set to launch its first direct, nonstop flights between Lisbon and Reykjavik, Iceland, beginning April 1, 2027. This new seasonal service will operate three times weekly using an Airbus A320neo aircraft, offering return fares starting
from €349. This marks a strategic shift for TAP, which previously relied on a codeshare agreement with Icelandair for this route. The introduction of TAP's own-metal flights will allow travelers to book single-ticket itineraries from a wider network of destinations, particularly from Portuguese-speaking Africa and South America, through Lisbon to Iceland. The service will run through October 28, 2027, covering Iceland's peak tourism season. This new offering will increase the total nonstop flights between Lisbon and Keflavik to five per week during the summer of 2027, combining TAP's new service with Icelandair's existing twice-weekly year-round flights.
Why It's Important?
This new direct route significantly enhances connectivity for travelers from the U.S. and other global regions looking to access Iceland via Lisbon. For passengers originating from or connecting through TAP's extensive network in South America and Africa, this means a more streamlined travel experience with a single itinerary, checked-bag receipt, and consistent passenger protections under EU Regulation 261/2004. Lisbon serves as a crucial European hub for connections to destinations like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Luanda, and Maputo. The increased flight frequency and direct service are expected to boost tourism to Iceland, a country where the sector accounts for approximately 8.8% of its GDP. This development also intensifies competition on the Lisbon-Keflavik route, potentially benefiting consumers through more options and competitive pricing.
What's Next?
The new TAP Air Portugal service will commence on April 1, 2027, with flights operating on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from Lisbon, and return flights on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays from Keflavik. Travelers can book fares now through flytap.com and global distribution partners. As a Star Alliance member, TAP's new route will also allow frequent flyers of partner airlines, including United, Lufthansa, and Singapore Airlines, to earn and redeem miles. The service is seasonal, concluding on October 28, 2027, meaning winter travelers to Iceland will still need to rely on Icelandair's year-round schedule or connect via other hubs. Passengers should note the overnight schedule of these flights, with late arrivals in Keflavik and early morning departures, requiring advance planning for accommodation and ground transport.
Beyond the Headlines
The strategic decision by TAP Air Portugal to operate its own flights to Reykjavik underscores the growing importance of Lisbon as a transatlantic and intercontinental hub. This move not only caters to direct demand between Portugal and Iceland but also leverages Lisbon's unique geographical position to facilitate travel from emerging markets in Africa and South America to Northern Europe. The increased air capacity and simplified travel logistics could foster greater cultural exchange and economic ties between these regions. Furthermore, the competition between TAP and Icelandair on this route highlights a broader trend in the aviation industry where airlines are increasingly optimizing their hub strategies to capture connecting traffic and expand their global reach, rather than solely focusing on point-to-point demand.
