What's Happening?
Air Astana has achieved a significant milestone by completing its 50th in-house C check for its Airbus A320-family aircraft. The airline has transitioned from outsourcing heavy maintenance to managing it internally at its facilities in Astana and Almaty,
Kazakhstan. This shift allows Air Astana to have greater control over maintenance schedules, reduce costs, and improve turnaround times. The airline's technical director, Robert Dando, highlighted the benefits of this move, including enhanced flexibility in fleet planning and the ability to optimize aircraft downtime.
Why It's Important?
The internalization of heavy maintenance by Air Astana is crucial for the airline's operational efficiency and cost management. By handling maintenance in-house, the airline can better align maintenance schedules with operational needs, potentially leading to improved aircraft availability and reduced operational disruptions. This strategic move also positions Air Astana to expand its maintenance capabilities, potentially offering third-party MRO services in the future. The development of an in-house apprenticeship program further supports the airline's long-term workforce needs, ensuring a steady supply of EASA-certified engineers.
