A review of 25 randomized controlled trials, led by Yongming Li at Shanghai University of Sport in China, has found that short bursts of exercise, often referred to as 'exercise snacks,' can provide an immediate boost to cognitive functions. These brief
sessions, lasting no more than 10 minutes and performed at least twice a day, were shown to improve working memory, cognitive flexibility, attention span, and the ability to ignore impulsive reactions. The review included 1115 participants across all age groups, from 8 to 78 years old, who engaged in activities like walking, stretching, yoga, or high-intensity exercises for a few minutes every 30 to 60 minutes. The cognitive benefits were more pronounced when the exercise habit was maintained for several weeks and when performed in school or workplace settings.
