What's Happening?
The University of Kent is providing 45-minute Virtual Instructor Classes for BODYCOMBAT™, a non-contact, mixed martial arts-inspired workout. These classes, part of the LES MILLS™ Virtual program, transform scientifically-backed workouts into cinematic
on-demand group fitness experiences. Presented on a big-screen projector in the Dance Studio at the Sports Centre, BODYCOMBAT™ aims to fuel cardio fitness, condition the entire body, and improve speed and overall fitness. Participants are encouraged to define and strengthen their upper and lower body while building core strength. The classes are suitable for all ability levels, from beginner to advanced, with adaptations available to accommodate everyone. All necessary equipment, including weights and mats, is provided in the studio.
Why It's Important?
The offering of virtual fitness classes like BODYCOMBAT™ at institutions such as the University of Kent highlights a significant shift in how fitness programs are delivered and accessed in the U.S. and globally. This approach provides ultimate flexibility, allowing individuals to participate in high-quality, structured workouts on demand, which is crucial for those with busy schedules or limited access to live instructor-led classes. For universities and fitness centers, virtual options can expand their reach, cater to a wider audience, and optimize facility usage. The emphasis on non-contact, mixed martial arts-inspired workouts also taps into a growing interest in diverse and engaging fitness modalities that offer both physical and mental benefits, such as stress relief and empowerment.
What's Next?
The University of Kent recommends that participants attend an in-person instructor class before engaging in virtual sessions to familiarize themselves with the check-in process and exercise station setup. This suggests a hybrid approach to fitness, combining the benefits of virtual flexibility with the foundational guidance of in-person instruction. Participants are advised to arrive 10 minutes early to set up their exercise station and to wear appropriate exercise clothing. The continued availability of such virtual programs indicates a sustained trend towards flexible and accessible fitness solutions, likely leading to further integration of technology in fitness offerings and potentially influencing how other institutions structure their wellness programs.
Beyond the Headlines
The rise of virtual instructor classes, particularly those from established brands like Les Mills, signifies a broader evolution in the fitness industry. This model democratizes access to expert-led workouts, moving beyond geographical and time constraints. It also underscores the increasing reliance on technology to deliver personalized and engaging experiences. While offering convenience, the recommendation for prior in-person attendance highlights a potential challenge: ensuring proper form and safety in a virtual environment. This blend of virtual and in-person guidance could become a standard, balancing accessibility with effective instruction. Furthermore, the focus on 'empowerment' and 'stress relief' in BODYCOMBAT™ points to a holistic view of fitness that addresses both physical and mental well-being, reflecting a growing consumer demand for comprehensive health solutions.
