What's Happening?
TotalEnergies, in partnership with Azerbaijan's state oil company SOCAR and XRG (an investment arm of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company), has made a final investment decision (FID) to proceed with the full-field development of the deepwater Absheron gas
and condensate field in the Caspian Sea. This project aims to meet Azerbaijan's domestic energy demands and fulfill export commitments to Turkey, thereby maximizing gas exports to Europe. Phase 1 of the Absheron field began production in 2023, yielding 1.5 Bcm/year of natural gas and 12,000 B/D of condensate. The expanded Phase 2 is projected to start production in 2029, adding an estimated 110,000 BOED at its peak. The full-field development includes a subsea development of three deepwater wells tied back to new onshore facilities in Sangachal for processing and export. The new onshore gas processing plant will be fully electrified and designed to minimize energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, targeting a Scope 1 and 2 emissions intensity of less than 4 kg CO2e/BOE.
Why It's Important?
This development is crucial for enhancing regional energy security, particularly for Europe, as it enables Azerbaijan to optimize its capacity on the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) system to meet gas export commitments to the EU. Azerbaijan has pledged to deliver 20 Bcm/year of natural gas to the EU by 2027. The Absheron field, with an estimated 140 Bcm of recoverable gas reserves, will significantly contribute to this goal. The project's focus on low-cost and low-emissions gas development aligns with global energy transition efforts, providing a more sustainable energy source. The involvement of XRG, which recently acquired a 12.5% equity stake in the SGC, underscores a strategic long-term investment in Caspian gas to boost deliveries to Europe. This expansion will diversify Europe's gas supply sources, potentially reducing reliance on other regions and contributing to price stability in the European gas market.
What's Next?
Phase 2 of the Absheron gas field development is expected to commence production in 2029. This will significantly increase Azerbaijan's natural gas output, with the Absheron field projected to produce up to 6 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually and 47,000 bpd of condensate. The gas will be supplied to Azerbaijan's domestic market and exported to Turkey through existing infrastructure, connecting to the European gas market. The project's progress will involve the continued construction of subsea infrastructure and onshore processing facilities. TotalEnergies and its partners will focus on ensuring the timely and efficient execution of Phase 2, adhering to the environmental and social impact assessments. The increased gas volumes from Absheron will play a vital role in Azerbaijan's commitment to supply 20 Bcm/year of natural gas to the EU by 2027, with ongoing efforts to optimize the Southern Gas Corridor for these increased exports.
Beyond the Headlines
The Absheron gas field development represents a broader strategic shift in European energy policy, emphasizing diversification of gas sources away from traditional suppliers. This project, with its commitment to low-emissions development, also highlights the evolving landscape of fossil fuel extraction, where environmental considerations are increasingly integrated into large-scale energy projects. The collaboration between TotalEnergies, SOCAR, and XRG signifies the complex geopolitical and economic alliances forming around energy resources in the Caspian region. The long-term implications include not only enhanced energy security for Europe but also a strengthened economic position for Azerbaijan as a key energy exporter. The project's success could also encourage further investment in similar low-emission gas developments globally, setting a precedent for future energy infrastructure projects that balance energy demand with environmental responsibility.
