What's Happening?
Lee Canyon has introduced the High Pines Trail, a new multi-use trail designed for hikers, trail runners, and uphill-only mountain biking. The trail, which opened in the summer of 2026, offers scenic views of Lee Peak, The Sisters, and McFarland Peak.
It spans two miles one way with an 850-foot vertical gain. Visitors can access the trail from the base area or via the Bristlecone Skyway chairlift. The trail provides three options for exploration: a four-mile out-and-back hike, an uphill hike with a chairlift ride down, or a chairlift ride up followed by a downhill hike. The trail aims to cater to both those seeking a workout and those looking for a leisurely adventure.
Why It's Important?
The opening of the High Pines Trail enhances recreational opportunities in Lee Canyon, attracting outdoor enthusiasts and boosting local tourism. By offering diverse options for trail exploration, the trail caters to a wide range of visitors, from families to avid hikers. This development is likely to increase visitor numbers, benefiting local businesses and the economy. Additionally, the trail's design promotes sustainable tourism by encouraging uphill-only biking, reducing potential trail erosion and congestion. The trail's opening aligns with broader trends in outdoor recreation, where multi-use trails are increasingly popular for their versatility and accessibility.
What's Next?
As the High Pines Trail gains popularity, Lee Canyon may consider expanding its trail network or enhancing existing facilities to accommodate increased visitor numbers. Future developments could include additional amenities such as rest areas, informational signage, or guided tours to enrich the visitor experience. Stakeholders, including local businesses and environmental groups, may collaborate to ensure the trail's sustainability and minimal environmental impact. Monitoring visitor feedback and trail usage will be crucial in planning future enhancements and maintaining the trail's appeal.
