Oklo Inc., a U.S.-based company specializing in advanced fission power plants, has received startup authorization from the Department of Energy (DOE) for its Groves Isotope Test Reactor. This authorization allows Oklo to proceed with fuel loading and
achieve first criticality, marking a significant milestone in the advanced nuclear sector. The approval was granted under the federal Reactor Pilot Program, which aims to accelerate the deployment and testing of advanced nuclear technologies. The Groves reactor, designed to secure a domestic supply of medical and industrial isotopes, was constructed on private land using commercially procured fuel and components, bypassing traditional national lab constraints. This project represents the fastest timeline from groundbreaking to regulatory approval in modern history, completed in just over 10 months.
