What's Happening?
A consortium led by Lightstorm is set to construct a new 3,600km submarine cable system, known as the I-2SEA, which will connect India, Malaysia, and Singapore. This project is scheduled to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2029. The cable will link
Singapore and Kuala Lumpur directly to Hyderabad and Chennai in India, with landing stations in Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh, and South Chennai. Partners in this venture include Microsoft, Singtel, and Tata Communications. The I-2SEA cable is designed to support the increasing demand for AI infrastructure, catering to hyperscalers, GPU infrastructure providers, and enterprises involved in AI training and inference. NEC Corporation will supply the system, and ASEAN Cableship Pte Ltd will handle marine installation.
Why It's Important?
The I-2SEA cable represents a significant investment in AI-ready infrastructure, positioning the India-Southeast Asia corridor as a crucial hub for next-generation computing and data transmission. This development is expected to enhance connectivity from 19 to 29 AI and cloud zones across India, facilitating improved data transmission performance on the Singapore-Malaysia-Hyderabad corridor.
