What's Happening?
The Barilla Group has announced significant improvements in the nutritional profile of its products, as detailed in its 2025 sustainability report, 'Our Sustainability Stories.' The company reports that 89% of its products now contain no more than 5 grams
of sugar per serving, and 90% contain no more than 0.5 grams of salt per serving. Barilla has also made strides in sustainable packaging, reducing the size of its Tagliatelle packaging, which has led to a reduction of 150 tonnes of packaging material and a 20% decrease in carbon dioxide emissions from transport. Additionally, Barilla's Carta del Mulino initiative, which focuses on regenerative agriculture, has contributed to a 10% annual reduction in CO2-equivalent emissions.
Why It's Important?
Barilla's efforts to improve the nutritional profile of its products and enhance sustainability reflect a growing consumer demand for healthier and more environmentally friendly food options. By reducing sugar and salt content, Barilla is addressing health concerns related to diet, which can have significant implications for public health. The company's focus on sustainable packaging and regenerative agriculture also aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and reduce environmental impact. These initiatives not only enhance Barilla's brand reputation but also set a precedent for other companies in the food industry to follow.
What's Next?
Barilla plans to continue its investment in sustainable practices, with a five-year plan to invest €168 million in production sites for improved energy efficiency and renewable energy systems. The company is also increasing its procurement spend for inclusive suppliers, aiming to create a more diverse and inclusive supply chain. These efforts are expected to further reduce environmental impact and promote social responsibility within the industry.
