What's Happening?
FGF Brands, a Toronto-based bread and baked foods manufacturer, has announced its plan to acquire the wholesale bakery operations of Première Moisson from Canadian grocer Metro Inc. The transaction, valued at C$90 million ($64.2 million), involves FGF taking
over the commercial production plant located in Baie-D'Urfé, Quebec. This acquisition will allow FGF to bake and distribute Première Moisson products, which are already available in Metro food stores across Quebec and Ontario. Despite the sale, Première Moisson will retain its brand, its network of 25 retail bakeries, and its artisanal production operations. Metro aims to leverage FGF's manufacturing and innovation capabilities to enhance its product offerings and operational efficiency.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition is significant as it represents a strategic move by Metro to streamline its operations by focusing on its core food and pharmaceutical retail activities. By partnering with FGF, Metro can benefit from enhanced innovation and product development capabilities, which could lead to improved product offerings for consumers. For FGF, this acquisition expands its footprint in the Canadian bakery market and allows it to leverage its expertise in manufacturing and distribution. The deal also ensures that Première Moisson's brand and quality remain intact, which is crucial for maintaining customer loyalty and market presence.
What's Next?
The transaction is expected to close by the end of Metro's fiscal 2026 fourth quarter, pending customary closing conditions. All affected employees of Première Moisson will be transferred to FGF, and both companies will work with the union representing these employees to ensure a smooth transition. This acquisition could prompt further consolidation in the bakery sector as companies seek to optimize their operations and expand their market reach.
