What's Happening?
Emerson College recently hosted its second annual Phantasmagorium event, transforming the Little Building into an underwater steampunk-inspired Halloween experience. The event, held on October 29, featured a variety of activities designed to bring students
together. Attendees enjoyed live jazz performances, interactive theatrical experiences, and a haunted house. Student organizations, including The Stranger Experiences and EC Agency, contributed to the event with a 'Submersive Immersive Horror Experience' and a 'Haunted Jazz Speakeasy' respectively. The night also included a Fashion Society Costume Catwalk and Halloween-themed music provided by WERS. Students engaged in activities such as face painting, costume borrowing, tarot readings, and enjoyed themed snacks. The haunted house proved particularly popular, drawing long lines of participants eager to experience the themed rooms and interactions with Emerson actors.
Why It's Important?
The Phantasmagorium event at Emerson College highlights the importance of community-building initiatives within educational institutions. Such events provide students with opportunities for social interaction and engagement outside of academic settings, which can contribute to a more vibrant and cohesive campus environment. By offering diverse activities like live performances, interactive experiences, and creative outlets, the college fosters a sense of belonging and shared experience among its student body. This is particularly significant in a university setting where students come from various backgrounds and may benefit from organized social events to connect with peers. The success and popularity of the Phantasmagorium suggest a strong student desire for such communal gatherings, reinforcing the value of investing in campus life programs that promote interaction and shared enjoyment.
What's Next?
Following the success of the second annual Phantasmagorium, Emerson College will likely continue to plan and expand similar community-focused events in the future. The positive reception from students, as noted by attendees like Carlota Reverter Custodio and Zoe Koropatkin, indicates a strong demand for these types of engaging activities. Organizers may look to incorporate feedback from this year's event to enhance future iterations, potentially introducing new themes, expanding interactive elements, or collaborating with more student groups. The continued emphasis on student-led initiatives, such as those by The Stranger Experiences and EC Agency, could also see these organizations taking on larger roles in planning and execution. The college's commitment to fostering a lively community through such events is expected to remain a priority.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate enjoyment and community building, events like the Phantasmagorium can have deeper implications for student well-being and institutional culture. Creating spaces for shared experiences and creative expression can alleviate academic stress, promote mental health, and cultivate a more inclusive campus atmosphere. The meticulous detail observed in costumes, decorations, and performances, as highlighted by Zoe Koropatkin, also underscores the value of student talent and dedication. Such events serve as practical showcases for students' skills in areas like event management, performance, design, and technical production, offering valuable real-world experience. Furthermore, by bringing together various student organizations, the Phantasmagorium fosters inter-group collaboration and strengthens the overall fabric of student life at Emerson College, contributing to a richer and more memorable collegiate experience.
