What's Happening?
Smitty’s Cinema in Windham is set to undergo a significant expansion of its entertainment offerings, leading to a temporary closure later this month. The renovation plans include converting one of the cinema's larger showrooms into a 50-game arcade and
another into a six-lane bowling alley. Additionally, a former mattress store adjacent to the theater will be integrated into the Smitty’s complex and transformed into a bar area featuring pool tables and classic film memorabilia. Albert Waitt, president of operations for Smitty’s Entertainment Group Inc., stated that this expansion aims to diversify the theater's offerings and establish it as an entertainment hub. This initiative follows successful similar expansions at Smitty’s locations in Sanford, Topsham, and Tilton, New Hampshire. The Windham location is the final one in the chain to receive such an upgrade. The cinema is expected to close at the end of August and fully reopen by Thanksgiving.
Why It's Important?
This expansion by Smitty's Cinema reflects a broader trend within the movie theater industry to adapt to changing consumer preferences and enhance revenue streams beyond traditional film screenings. By integrating diverse entertainment options like arcades, bowling alleys, and bar areas, Smitty's is positioning itself as a comprehensive entertainment destination rather than solely a movie theater. This strategy is crucial for the industry's sustainability, especially given the rise of streaming services and the impact of events like the COVID-19 pandemic on cinema attendance. The move aims to attract a wider demographic and encourage longer stays, increasing per-customer spending. For the local community in Windham, this development means more varied recreational opportunities and potentially a boost to local commerce. It also highlights the importance of 'social gaming' and interactive experiences in an increasingly digital world, providing spaces for people to engage in person.
What's Next?
Smitty's Cinema in Windham will close temporarily at the end of August to commence the renovations. The full reopening is anticipated by Thanksgiving, at which point patrons will be able to experience the new arcade, bowling alley, and bar area. The success of this expansion will likely be closely watched by other cinema chains and entertainment venues considering similar diversification strategies. Albert Waitt expressed excitement about the new features, particularly the bowling alley with its wall-sized LED screen designed to enhance the experience with visual and sound effects. The company's focus on expanding 'social gaming' options suggests a continued commitment to evolving its business model to meet consumer demand for interactive and communal entertainment. The outcome of this renovation could influence future investment decisions within the entertainment sector.
Beyond the Headlines
The strategic shift by Smitty's Cinema to become an entertainment hub underscores a significant evolution in how physical entertainment venues are striving to remain relevant in the digital age. This move goes beyond simply showing movies; it's about creating a multi-faceted experience that offers diverse activities and fosters social interaction. The emphasis on 'social gaming' options like bowling and arcades suggests a recognition that consumers are increasingly seeking experiences that allow them to connect with others in a tangible way, moving away from purely screen-based entertainment. This trend could lead to a resurgence of community-centric entertainment complexes, where people can engage in a variety of activities under one roof. It also highlights the resilience and adaptability of the entertainment industry, constantly innovating to provide value and draw audiences in an ever-changing landscape.
