Fitness experts are emphasizing the importance of concurrent training, which involves combining both strength training and cardiovascular exercise, to achieve superior health adaptations. This approach challenges the common misconception, often termed
'the interference effect,' that too much cardio 'kills' strength gains or that excessive strength training inhibits endurance. Bradley Schoenfeld, PhD, CSCS, a strength researcher and professor in exercise science at Lehman College, and Stephen Ranellone, CSCS, FRCms, FMS, an exercise physiologist at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, both highlight that for the general population, it is entirely possible to improve cardiovascular health and overall strength simultaneously. Research indicates that combining these two forms of exercise leads to enhanced metabolic rate, insulin sensitivity, improved body composition, and gains in muscle, strength, power, and endurance. While cardio is crucial for heart and lung health and longevity, strength training builds physical capability, balance, aids blood glucose management, and protects against sarcopenia and osteoporosis.

The emphasis on concurrent training could lead to more holistic health outcomes, addressing issues like muscle loss, which is a common side effect of weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic and Mounjaro. By promoting a balanced approach, individuals can mitigate such adverse effects and improve overall physical resilience. Furthermore, the 'interference effect' myth, if debunked, could encourage more people to engage in both types of exercise without fear of compromising their goals, leading to a healthier, more active population and potentially reducing the burden on the healthcare system.
