Kongsberg Maritime has announced its agreement to acquire Steerprop, a Finnish company specializing in azimuth propulsion systems. This strategic acquisition aims to bolster Kongsberg Maritime's presence in the growing market for Arctic and high ice-class
vessels. Steerprop designs and manufactures propulsion systems specifically for demanding applications such as icebreakers, polar research vessels, and offshore support vessels. The company currently has over 400 vessels globally equipped with its systems and a substantial order backlog, predominantly linked to Arctic and ice-class projects. Lisa Edvardsen Haugan, CEO of Kongsberg Maritime, stated that this acquisition is a strategic move to combine Steerprop’s specialized Arctic propulsion expertise with Kongsberg Maritime’s global organization, lifecycle services network, and systems integration capabilities. Both companies will continue to operate independently until the transaction is finalized, with existing projects and contractual commitments remaining unchanged. The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.
