What's Happening?
UK-headquartered Primetals Technologies has completed a concept and economic study for US-based MagIron, evaluating three viable production routes for large-scale granulated pig iron. The study confirms that each route—MIDREX Flex direct reduction followed
by electric smelting, MIDREX Flex direct reduction followed by electric arc furnace and ladle furnace processing, and conventional blast-furnace production—can produce approximately two million tons of granulated pig iron annually. This initiative supports MagIron's strategy to become a key supplier of high-quality iron units essential for the decarbonization of the U.S. steel industry. MagIron plans to leverage its existing mining, processing, pelletizing, and logistics infrastructure in Minnesota and Indiana.
Why It's Important?
The U.S. currently imports nearly all of the four to six million tons of merchant pig iron required by its steel industry annually. This reliance creates a significant strategic vulnerability for critical sectors like automotive, defense, infrastructure, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing, all of which depend on secure access to high-quality steel. MagIron's plan to produce two million tons of pig iron domestically could fulfill one-third of current U.S. demand, substantially reducing this import dependency and enhancing national security. This development is crucial for the decarbonization efforts within the U.S. steel industry, as high-quality iron units are vital for cleaner steel production processes. What's Next?
MagIron aims to achieve initial commissioning and first hot metal production within two to three years following a final investment decision. The company intends to advance the development of domestic pig iron production while maintaining the flexibility to produce and sell direct reduction-grade pellets based on market conditions and customer requirements. Primetals Technologies will continue its partnership with MagIron, supporting the project's next stages of development.
