The University of Arizona and National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) have officially launched a joint research and education center named the Silicon Photonics at Arizona-Kaohsiung Center (SPARK). This new global hub is dedicated to developing advanced
technologies for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing, specifically focusing on improving the performance and efficiency of semiconductor systems. The initiative also aims to cultivate the next generation of semiconductor and photonics professionals in Southern Arizona and Taiwan. SPARK will bring together researchers and industry partners to enhance data transfer between computing components, exploring optical systems for high bandwidth and lower energy loss, advanced packaging, and co-packaged optics to reduce power consumption and data lag. The launch occurred during SEMICON Taiwan, a significant industry gathering in Taipei, underscoring the strategic importance of this collaboration.
