Nordstrom Rack, a department store chain, is scheduled to open a new 26,000-square-foot store in Rockville, Maryland, on October 29, 2026. The new location will be situated at 1683 Rockville Pike within
Congressional Plaza, joining other retailers such as Athleta, Barnes and Noble, and Taco Bamba. According to Nordstrom Rack President Gemma Lionello, the company aims to serve the Rockville community by offering a wide selection of brands at discounted prices, with up to 70% off on apparel, accessories, beauty products, home decor, and shoes. The new store will also provide customer-friendly services, including online order pick-up from Nordstrom.com and NordstromRack.com.
Why It's Important?
The opening of a new Nordstrom Rack in Rockville signifies continued growth and investment in the retail sector within the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. For consumers, it means increased access to discounted fashion and home goods, potentially driving competition among retailers in the region. From an economic perspective, this expansion is expected to create new job opportunities, contributing to the local and statewide economy. Nordstrom Inc. currently operates three Nordstrom stores and six Nordstrom Rack locations in Maryland, collectively generating an estimated more than 1,000 jobs statewide. The addition of this new store will further enhance the company's economic impact and provide employment with benefits such as 401k, medical/vision/dental/life/disability insurance options, and paid time off.
What's Next?
Following the announcement, Nordstrom Rack will proceed with the development and outfitting of the 26,000-square-foot space at Congressional Plaza in preparation for its October 2026 opening. The company will likely initiate hiring efforts for various seasonal and regular positions to staff the new store, offering competitive benefits. Local residents and shoppers can anticipate a new retail option that complements the existing mix of national and local shopping, dining, and service brands at Congressional Plaza. The opening will also be a key event for Federal Realty, the real estate investment trust that owns Congressional Plaza, as it aims to further elevate the shopping experience for its customers.
Beyond the Headlines
The strategic placement of Nordstrom Rack within Congressional Plaza highlights a broader trend in retail development, where off-price retailers are increasingly integrated into established shopping centers to attract a diverse customer base. This move reflects a consumer demand for value-driven shopping experiences, even in affluent areas. The inclusion of services like online order pick-up also underscores the evolving omnichannel retail strategy, where physical stores serve as crucial touchpoints for digital sales. This blend of in-store and online services is essential for retailers to remain competitive and cater to modern consumer preferences, blurring the lines between traditional brick-and-mortar and e-commerce operations.
