What's Happening?
Hillel International has launched the Men to Mensches (M2M) program, aimed at engaging young Jewish men in meaningful conversations about Jewish values and identity. Developed at Penn State Hillel, M2M is a peer-led initiative that takes place within
existing male-networked communities, such as fraternities and athletic teams. The program involves peer facilitators leading discussions with their peers, supported by Hillel educators who provide guidance and structure. This approach shifts the role of educators from primary facilitators to trainers and coaches, fostering a sense of ownership and leadership among participants.
Why It's Important?
The M2M program addresses a significant challenge in Jewish communities: the under-engagement of male students in Jewish life. By leveraging existing social networks and empowering students to lead discussions, M2M transforms passive participation into active engagement. This model not only strengthens Jewish identity and leadership skills among young men but also has the potential to create lasting impacts on Jewish communities by fostering a new generation of leaders. The program's success at Penn State and its expansion to 17 campuses highlight its potential to be a scalable solution for male engagement in Jewish life.
What's Next?
Hillel International plans to continue piloting the M2M program across various campuses to assess its scalability and effectiveness. The organization aims to refine the program based on feedback and insights gained from these pilots. If successful, M2M could serve as a model for other Jewish organizations seeking to enhance male engagement. Additionally, the program's emphasis on peer-led learning could inspire similar initiatives in other educational and community settings, promoting a broader cultural shift towards student-led leadership and engagement.
