What's Happening?
The Aluminium Federation (ALFED) in the UK is emphasizing the importance of recognizing aluminium scrap as a strategic resource to bolster the country's industrial future. ALFED argues that while the UK has effective collection and recycling systems,
the real challenge lies in capturing the value of aluminium domestically rather than exporting it. The UK exported over 23,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap to the United States in 2025, a significant increase from previous years. Despite strong collection systems, the UK lacks sufficient midstream processing capabilities, such as advanced sorting and alloy-specific processing, which makes exporting scrap more viable. ALFED is working with the UK Aluminium Alliance to map capabilities and identify investment opportunities to improve domestic processing conditions.
Why It's Important?
This development is crucial for the UK's industrial competitiveness and resilience. By retaining and processing aluminium scrap domestically, the UK can reduce its reliance on imported primary aluminium, which is subject to geopolitical risks and supply chain disruptions. Enhancing domestic processing capabilities could lead to significant energy savings and support the UK's net-zero goals. Moreover, strengthening the domestic aluminium industry could create economic benefits and job opportunities. The focus on improving market conditions and policy frameworks is essential to attract investment and ensure that the UK can capitalize on its aluminium resources.
What's Next?
ALFED and the UK Aluminium Alliance are actively working to create a framework that connects supply, processing, demand, and policy into a cohesive system. This involves addressing industrial competitiveness, particularly energy costs, and improving data transparency to optimize material value. The UK government and industry stakeholders are expected to collaborate on building the necessary infrastructure and policy environment to support domestic aluminium processing. The success of these efforts will depend on clear and stable investment signals and a competitive environment that encourages long-term decision-making.
