What's Happening?
Matt Harmon, CEO of Harmony Wine and a Charlottesville native, is featured in the Virginia Tourism Corporation's (VTC) 'Heart & Soul' video series. This campaign aims to highlight Virginia's Black culture from a tourism perspective. Harmon, who founded
Harmony Wine in 2020, is recognized for making wine more accessible and curating wine tours in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area. The 'Heart & Soul' campaign, initiated in 2021, uses statistical research to understand how Black travelers choose destinations and what they do upon arrival. Liza Mickens, VTC social media specialist and creative lead for the campaign, emphasized the importance of travelers seeing themselves reflected in a welcoming space. The series features nine influential figures from across the state, including Harmon, who provide city guides focusing on Black culture and experiences. Harmon's segment showcases his favorite spots in Charlottesville, including Crush Pad, The Alley Light, Ten, IX Art Park, the Saunders-Monticello trail, and the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center, which holds personal family history for him.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is important as it addresses a significant gap in tourism marketing by specifically targeting and representing Black travelers. By showcasing Black entrepreneurs and cultural sites, the VTC aims to make Virginia a more inclusive and appealing destination for a diverse audience. This approach not only promotes economic growth in local communities by drawing in new visitors but also helps to correct historical oversights in how Black culture and history are presented in tourism. The campaign's focus on contemporary Black culture, rather than solely historical narratives, provides a more holistic and engaging picture of the state. For businesses like Harmony Wine, being featured in such a campaign can lead to increased visibility and patronage, benefiting local economies and fostering a more inclusive business environment. It also empowers Black communities to tell their own stories, shifting perceptions beyond traditional historical contexts.
What's Next?
The 'Heart & Soul' campaign is ongoing, with video tours available on the Virginia is for Lovers YouTube channel. The VTC plans to continue its efforts to highlight Black culture and history across Virginia, with Mickens indicating that the campaign is far from over. This suggests future iterations of the series, potentially featuring more influencers and exploring additional regions and cultural aspects of the state. The success of this campaign could also inspire other state tourism boards to adopt similar inclusive marketing strategies, leading to a broader shift in how cultural tourism is promoted nationwide. Continued engagement with local entrepreneurs and community leaders will likely be a key component of future campaign developments, further solidifying the representation of diverse voices in tourism.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'Heart & Soul' campaign delves into deeper implications concerning cultural representation and the power of narrative in tourism. By actively promoting Black entrepreneurs and cultural sites, the VTC is challenging long-standing perceptions of Virginia's history, which often focused predominantly on plantation narratives. This initiative fosters a more nuanced understanding of the state's rich and diverse cultural tapestry, acknowledging both its past and its vibrant present. Ethically, it promotes inclusivity and ensures that tourism benefits a wider range of communities. Culturally, it empowers Black voices and narratives, allowing for self-representation and the celebration of contemporary achievements. This shift can contribute to a more equitable tourism industry and encourage a broader appreciation for the diverse contributions of all communities to American culture and economy.
