What's Happening?
The Australian Fashion Council (AFC) is set to launch its inaugural 'Australian Fashion Rooms' showroom during Paris Fashion Week, running from September 30 to October 4, 2026. This initiative will feature 12 Australian designers, aiming to position Australian fashion
within the global market. The selected designers represent a diverse range of styles, including couture, ready-to-wear, First Nations-led practices, artisanal craft, and experimental design. This marks the AFC's largest international trade initiative to date, supported by Austrade through the Trade Diversification Network and Create NSW as part of its Fashion Sector Strategy. The program includes export readiness training, industry engagement, and an in-market platform to connect designers with international buyers, media, and industry leaders.
Why It's Important?
This debut at Paris Fashion Week is a significant step for the Australian fashion industry, which contributes $27.2 billion to the Australian economy and generates $7.2 billion in exports. By providing a dedicated platform in one of the world's most influential fashion capitals, the AFC aims to create stronger pathways for Australian brands into global markets. This initiative not only boosts the visibility of Australian designers but also fosters economic growth through increased exports and international trade. The support from government bodies like Austrade and Create NSW underscores a strategic effort to recognize fashion as a vital export industry and to invest in its international development, ultimately benefiting the Australian economy and its creative sector.
What's Next?
Ahead of the Paris Fashion Week showroom, participating designers will undergo a structured readiness program focusing on market-facing brand positioning, wholesale and export preparation, and collection presentation to international audiences. The program will officially commence with a reception at the Australian Embassy in Paris, hosted by Australian Ambassador to France, Ms. Lynette Wood, bringing together designers with international stakeholders. Following the showroom, the AFC plans to continue its Global Gateways program, with additional markets targeted for 2027, indicating a sustained effort to expand the international presence of Australian fashion. The winning brands from the RUN x ANDAM FASHION AWARDS PARIS showroom will also receive ongoing support for global efforts over four seasons.
Beyond the Headlines
The initiative highlights a broader trend of national fashion councils actively promoting their local talent on the international stage, recognizing the cultural and economic value of the fashion industry. It also emphasizes the importance of government and industry collaboration in fostering export opportunities for creative sectors. The inclusion of First Nations-led practices among the selected designers points to a growing recognition of diverse cultural influences in global fashion, promoting unique narratives and craftsmanship. This strategic push could lead to a long-term shift in how Australian fashion is perceived globally, moving beyond traditional centers and establishing its distinct identity and creative independence.
