The City of Fort Wayne has received four grants totaling $54,109 from Norfolk Southern. These grants were awarded through Norfolk Southern's Thriving Communities Grant Program and Safety First Grant Program, both launched in 2023. The funding will support
four distinct initiatives aimed at enhancing safety, resilience, and vibrancy within the city. Specifically, the grants will fund neighborhood safety lighting, upgraded fire training for the Fort Wayne Fire Department, expanded police intelligence-sharing infrastructure for the Fort Wayne Police Department, and a corridor trades and beautification project. Kristin Wong, Director of the Norfolk Southern Foundation & Community Impact, stated that these grant programs support initiatives that strengthen local economies, enhance public safety, and promote long-term resilience across Norfolk Southern's 22-state network. The Safety First Grant Program provides up to $15,000 for first responders and organizations focused on emergency preparedness and prevention, while the Thriving Communities Grant Program offers up to $50,000 for organizations building long-term economic opportunity and resilience.
