What's Happening?
The International Trade Centre (ITC), through its Ye! Community, in partnership with the G20 Global Land Initiative and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), has launched the Youth Ecopreneur Programme (YECO) 2026/27. This international
initiative aims to empower young entrepreneurs who are developing innovative business solutions to address environmental challenges, promote sustainability, and contribute to a greener global economy. The program provides young innovators with opportunities to develop, strengthen, and scale environmentally sustainable businesses. It targets ambitious entrepreneurs under 35 years of age who are founders, co-founders, or CEOs of legally registered businesses primarily run by young people, demonstrating a clear understanding of environmental challenges and presenting innovative, scalable solutions focused on land restoration or green business development. The program structure includes a global bootcamp, a global accelerator with personalized coaching and mentorship, and the Youth Ecopreneur Awards, culminating in a scale and impact phase.
Why It's Important?
The YECO 2026/27 program is crucial for fostering a new generation of business leaders committed to environmental responsibility and sustainable development. By supporting young ecopreneurs, the initiative directly addresses global challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, and land degradation. The program's focus on transforming innovative ideas into commercially viable businesses creates economic opportunities while delivering measurable environmental and social impact. The provision of seed funding, mentorship, legal guidance, and access to international networks helps overcome common barriers to growth for young entrepreneurs. This support system is vital for developing scalable environmental solutions that can contribute to a stronger ecosystem for youth-led environmental innovation and advocate for an inclusive and equitable transition towards sustainable economies. The program's international scope also highlights the global commitment to green business innovation.
What's Next?
Applications for the YECO 2026/27 program are currently open through the official Youth Ecopreneur Programme website. Interested entrepreneurs are encouraged to review the eligibility requirements and application guidelines before submitting their applications. The program will proceed with its structured development pathway, starting with the global bootcamp, followed by the global accelerator for selected eligible entrepreneurs. The Youth Ecopreneur Awards will provide a platform for outstanding young entrepreneurs to showcase their innovations, with past winners receiving funding and capacity-building support. The final phase will focus on supporting entrepreneurs in expanding their businesses and increasing their environmental and socioeconomic contributions. The initiative will continue to promote the participation of young entrepreneurs in international environmental discussions and decision-making platforms.
Beyond the Headlines
The Youth Ecopreneur Programme signifies a broader shift towards integrating environmental sustainability with economic development, recognizing young entrepreneurs as key drivers of this transition. Beyond the immediate benefits of funding and mentorship, the program cultivates a global network of sustainability-driven business leaders, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange across borders. This initiative also underscores the growing importance of public-private partnerships and international cooperation in addressing complex environmental issues. By empowering young innovators, the program not only aims to create green jobs and sustainable businesses but also to instill a long-term commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility within the entrepreneurial ecosystem. The emphasis on land restoration and green business development reflects a proactive approach to mitigating the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
