What's Happening?
Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills is currently hosting 'The Gilded Age' floral exhibition, which opened on October 28, 2026, and will run through November 4, 2026. This event, presented in partnership with HBO Max, coincides with the November 1 premiere
of the fourth season of the HBO historical drama 'The Gilded Age.' The exhibition features 18 characters from the series recreated through intricate displays composed of thousands of fresh flowers. Each floral mannequin is carefully adorned with flowers representing elements of the characters' wardrobes. This is the first Fleurs de Villes exhibition in the greater Los Angeles area and the company's 175th show worldwide, according to co-founder Karen Marshall. The Beverly Hills City Council approved the exhibition in June, waiving over $212,000 in rental and staffing charges for Greystone Mansion, in exchange for 20% of net ticket sales. Local florists from Southern California contributed to the creation of these elaborate botanical mannequins, with participants receiving an honorarium for their time and floral expenditures.
Why It's Important?
This exhibition holds significance for both the entertainment industry and local commerce in Beverly Hills. For HBO Max, it serves as a unique and immersive promotional event for the new season of 'The Gilded Age,' leveraging a historical setting to enhance the show's brand and attract viewers. For Beverly Hills, the event is expected to generate economic benefits beyond direct ticket sales. Karen Marshall emphasized that Fleurs de Villes prioritizes local engagement, hiring local floral artists, labor, and printers, which injects revenue into the community. The city's agreement to waive significant fees in exchange for a share of ticket sales demonstrates a strategic investment in cultural tourism, aiming to draw visitors who will also spend on local businesses, hotels, and services. This model highlights how cultural events can be a catalyst for local economic activity and tourism, benefiting various stakeholders from florists to hospitality providers.
What's Next?
The 'The Gilded Age' floral exhibition will continue to run daily through November 4, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can purchase tickets ranging from $28 to $36. A special 'The Gilded Age at Golden Hour' event is scheduled for October 30, offering an after-hours experience with floral cocktails and charcuterie on Greystone's terrace. Attendees can also vote for their favorite floral mannequin and participate in floral demonstrations and talks. The Beverly Hills City Council's projections estimate that the city's revenue share could reach between $67,200 and $112,000, depending on attendance figures. If this initial exhibition proves successful, Fleurs de Villes co-founder Karen Marshall has indicated a desire for a long-term partnership with Beverly Hills, suggesting the possibility of future themed exhibitions in the area.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond its immediate commercial and promotional aspects, this exhibition subtly underscores the enduring fascination with historical periods like the Gilded Age, particularly as depicted in popular culture. The show's focus on 'old money clashing with new money' resonates with contemporary discussions about wealth disparity and social status. The use of a historic mansion like Greystone, itself a symbol of opulence, to house an exhibition inspired by a period of lavish spending, creates a layered experience that blurs the lines between historical context, fictional narrative, and modern-day spectacle. The intricate floral designs, requiring significant artistic skill and logistical planning to maintain fresh flowers over an eight-day period, also highlight the ephemeral nature of beauty and luxury, mirroring the transient nature of fortunes and social standing during the original Gilded Age. This event serves as a cultural bridge, connecting historical themes with contemporary artistic expression and economic realities.
