What's Happening?
American Express has announced upcoming changes to its Business Gold Card, specifically impacting the 4x rewards categories for online, television, and radio advertising, as well as monthly wireless telephone services. Effective February 17, 2027, eligible
purchases in the advertising category will be limited to direct transactions with select media providers, including Amazon, GoDaddy, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Yelp. Similarly, 4x rewards for monthly wireless telephone service charges will only apply to direct purchases from specific U.S. providers such such as AT&T, Charter, Comcast, Frontier, Mint Mobile, Optimum, Spectrum Mobile, T-Mobile, Ultra Mobile, UScellular, and Verizon. These adjustments follow earlier changes made this month to the card's monthly statement credits for FedEx, Grubhub, and office supply stores, where FedEx was replaced with UPS.com. The card's overall structure of earning 4x Membership Rewards points on the top two spending categories (up to $150,000 annually) will remain, but the qualifying merchants within those categories are being restricted.
Why It's Important?
These changes are significant for U.S. businesses that utilize the American Express Business Gold Card for their advertising and wireless expenses. Many businesses, particularly those heavily invested in digital marketing, rely on these bonus categories to maximize their rewards earnings. The new restrictions mean that if a business uses an advertising platform or wireless provider not on the approved list, those expenses will no longer qualify for the 4x points, potentially leading to a substantial reduction in earned Membership Rewards. This could force businesses to re-evaluate their vendor relationships or credit card strategies to maintain their current rewards accumulation. For American Express, this move could streamline their rewards program and potentially reduce their payout liabilities, but it also risks alienating a segment of their business cardholders who value the broader applicability of the current rewards structure.
What's Next?
Businesses currently holding the American Express Business Gold Card will need to review their spending patterns and vendor contracts well in advance of the February 17, 2027, effective date. They may consider shifting their advertising spend to the approved platforms (Amazon, GoDaddy, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Yelp) or switching wireless providers to those on the specified list to continue earning 4x points. Alternatively, businesses might explore other credit card options that offer more flexible or higher rewards in their specific spending categories. American Express may monitor cardholder reactions and spending shifts following these changes, potentially influencing future adjustments to their rewards programs. Cardholders should also anticipate further communications from American Express detailing these changes and their implications.
Beyond the Headlines
The narrowing of rewards categories by American Express reflects a broader trend in the credit card industry where issuers are increasingly optimizing their loyalty programs to manage costs and direct spending towards preferred partners. This move could signal a shift towards more curated and less universal rewards structures, potentially impacting how businesses manage their operational expenses and financial incentives. It also highlights the growing importance of strategic partnerships between credit card companies and major tech/telecom giants. For small and medium-sized businesses, these changes could add another layer of complexity to financial planning, requiring more diligent tracking of eligible merchants and potentially limiting their choice of service providers if maximizing rewards remains a priority. This could also lead to increased competition among credit card issuers to offer more attractive and flexible business rewards programs.
