What's Happening?
Barkly Rare Earths has commenced civil works for a significant drilling program aimed at expanding its inferred mineral resource in the Northern Territory. The project involves a 10,000-meter drilling initiative targeting the Immediate Zone of the Barkly Project.
This effort includes approximately 400 holes, each averaging 25 meters deep. The company is focusing on expanding its 40 million tonne inferred mineral resource, which currently grades at 2,100 parts per million total rare earth oxide. The drilling program is set to begin next week, with earthmoving equipment already on site and portable X-ray fluorescence instruments ready for rapid screening. The mineral resource is characterized by its 'soft rock' deposit, which offers substantial scale potential and low radioactive element content, distinguishing it from other global rare earth projects.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of Barkly Rare Earths' mineral resource is significant for the rare earth industry, particularly in the context of increasing global demand for these materials. Rare earth elements are crucial for various high-tech applications, including electronics, renewable energy technologies, and defense systems. The successful expansion of Barkly's resource could enhance the company's position in the market and contribute to the supply chain of rare earth materials. Additionally, the project's location in the Northern Territory may provide economic benefits to the region through job creation and investment in infrastructure. The low deleterious radioactive element content of the deposit also presents environmental advantages, potentially reducing the impact of mining activities.
What's Next?
Barkly Rare Earths plans to continue exploration throughout the third and fourth quarters of 2026, with a mineral resource estimate update expected in the fourth quarter. The company will also conduct geometallurgical test work and modeling to support future development of its indicated and measured mineral resources. Additionally, reconnaissance mapping and rock-chip sampling at the Buntine Base Metals Project are underway, with assay results anticipated in the third quarter. These efforts may reveal further opportunities for resource expansion and development, positioning Barkly for continued growth in the rare earth sector.
