What's Happening?
Mondelez International, Inc. has announced a majority investment in Undercover Snacks, an innovative better-for-you snack company. Undercover Snacks, known for its chocolate and frosted quinoa crisps, will continue to operate as a standalone business
led by its existing management team, including Founder and CEO Diana Levy and President and COO Michael Levy. The company, which started in Diana Levy's kitchen, has grown significantly, with products sold in over 25,000 retail locations and served on United Airlines. Undercover Snacks emphasizes healthy ingredients, is non-GMO, certified gluten-free, and produced in a peanut-free, tree-nut-free facility powered by solar energy, using Rainforest Alliance-certified cocoa. This acquisition will provide Undercover Snacks with access to Mondelez's extensive capabilities in sales, distribution, marketing, procurement, and consumer insights to accelerate its growth and innovation.
Why It's Important?
This strategic investment by Mondelez International highlights a growing trend in the snacking industry towards healthier and more specialized options. For Mondelez, a global snack leader with approximately $38.5 billion in net revenues in 2025, this acquisition strengthens its portfolio in the 'better-for-you' segment, catering to increasing consumer demand for snacks with simple, high-quality, and allergen-friendly ingredients. For Undercover Snacks, the partnership offers a significant opportunity to expand its reach and scale, leveraging Mondelez's global infrastructure while maintaining its entrepreneurial culture and product integrity. This move could lead to wider availability of gluten-free and sustainably sourced snack options in the U.S. market, benefiting consumers seeking such products and potentially influencing other large snack manufacturers to invest in similar ventures.
What's Next?
Undercover Snacks will operate within Mondelez International's North America Ventures business unit, alongside other high-growth brands like Perfect Snacks, Tate's Bake Shop, and Hu Chocolate. Diana and Michael Levy will retain a significant minority stake and serve on the Board of Directors, ensuring continuity in leadership and vision. The immediate focus will likely be on integrating Undercover Snacks into Mondelez's distribution networks and leveraging its marketing expertise to further expand the brand's presence. Consumers can expect to see Undercover Snacks in more retail locations and potentially new product innovations as the company benefits from Mondelez's resources. This partnership is poised to accelerate Undercover Snacks' journey from a nationally recognized brand to a potentially major global player in the snacking industry.
Beyond the Headlines
This acquisition reflects a broader shift in consumer preferences and corporate strategies within the food industry. The emphasis on 'healthy ingredients in disguise,' gluten-free certification, and sustainable sourcing (Rainforest Alliance-certified cocoa, solar-powered facility) by Undercover Snacks aligns with evolving consumer values regarding health, wellness, and environmental responsibility. For Mondelez, integrating such a brand not only diversifies its offerings but also enhances its corporate image as a company responsive to these trends. The continued operation of Undercover Snacks as a standalone entity suggests a model where large corporations acquire innovative smaller brands to tap into niche markets while preserving the unique identity and agility of the acquired company. This approach could foster more innovation in the snack sector, as smaller brands see a clearer path to scaling their impact through partnerships with industry giants.
