What's Happening?
IBM and Lockheed Martin have partnered with ETH Zurich to establish a national hub for quantum innovation in Switzerland, driven by an offset agreement with armasuisse, Switzerland’s Federal Office for Defence Procurement. This collaboration will result
in the deployment of Switzerland’s first on-premises IBM Quantum System Two at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) in Lugano by late 2026. The system, powered by the IBM Quantum Nighthawk r2 processor, will feature 120 programmable qubits and high-speed qubit reset architecture, capable of executing over 100,000 circuits per second. This initiative aims to create a quantum-centric supercomputing environment for high-performance hybrid classical-quantum workflows, with Lockheed Martin and IBM conducting dedicated defense R&D programs focused on quantum sensing for GPS-denied navigation and material optimization for additive alloy manufacturing.
