What's Happening?
The Virginia Opera is hosting a collaborative concert on Sunday at the Harrison Opera House in Norfolk, featuring seven emerging opera soloists alongside the Virginia Opera Chorus, Virginia Symphony Orchestra, and groups from Norfolk State and Elizabeth
City State universities. This free public performance will conclude 'Voices Forward,' a three-day vocal residency organized by the Denyce Graves Foundation. The residency provides musical coaching and educational sessions on various aspects of a professional singing career, including physical and mental health, business, financial literacy, marketing, and social media use. The concert will include solo and group performances of popular opera and Broadway pieces, as well as selections by contemporary Black composers Adolphus Hailstork and Damien Geter. English captions will be provided for songs in foreign languages. The Generational Voices initiative, launched by internationally acclaimed opera star Denyce Graves, aims to support a diverse range of singers in building their careers.
Why It's Important?
This collaborative concert and residency are crucial for the development of emerging opera talent in the U.S., particularly for singers from diverse backgrounds. The Denyce Graves Foundation's 'Generational Voices' initiative addresses a critical gap in professional development for young artists who have completed formal training but lack the practical skills and networks needed to sustain a career in opera. By providing comprehensive training in business, marketing, and financial literacy, the program equips singers with the tools necessary to navigate the complex music industry. The collaboration with the Virginia Opera and Virginia Symphony Orchestra offers invaluable performance experience and exposure, which is essential for building a professional resume. This initiative also promotes diversity within the opera world by showcasing works by contemporary Black composers and supporting singers from historically underrepresented communities, contributing to a more inclusive and vibrant artistic landscape.
What's Next?
The 'Voices Forward' residency culminates with the free public concert on Sunday, offering a platform for the emerging soloists to showcase their talents. Following this event, the Generational Voices fellows will continue to build their professional networks and resumes, leveraging the stage credit from the Virginia Opera. The Denyce Graves Foundation is expected to continue its mission of supporting diverse singers through similar programs and initiatives, potentially expanding its reach to other opera companies and educational institutions. The interaction between Generational Voices singers and students from The Governor’s School for the Arts, as well as collegiate musicians, suggests ongoing mentorship and educational opportunities. The success of this concert could also encourage more collaborations between established opera companies and foundations dedicated to artist development, fostering a more robust ecosystem for classical music talent in the United States.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'Generational Voices' initiative, spearheaded by Denyce Graves, highlights a significant ethical and systemic challenge within the performing arts: the often-unspoken expectation for artists to possess not only exceptional talent but also a wide array of business and life skills. The program's focus on 'the whole person' and practical career development, beyond vocal technique, addresses the harsh realities of a highly competitive industry where artistic merit alone is often insufficient for sustained success. This approach challenges the traditional conservatory model, which historically prioritizes artistic training over entrepreneurial and financial literacy. By emphasizing resilience and adaptability, including embracing diverse genres and skills like acting and dancing, the initiative encourages a more holistic and sustainable career path for singers. This model could inspire broader reforms in arts education, advocating for curricula that better prepare artists for the multifaceted demands of a modern professional career, ultimately fostering a more equitable and supportive environment for emerging talent.
