Magna has developed a new driver monitoring system that integrates an RGB and infrared camera directly into the interior rearview mirror. This system is designed to continuously observe the driver's attention to the road and can more quickly detect distractions
compared to other camera placements. The strategic placement in the rearview mirror ensures an unobstructed view of the driver, unlike cameras mounted on the dashboard, A-pillar, or steering column, which can be partially obscured by the steering wheel or the driver's hands. This technology is particularly relevant with the increasing prevalence of partially automated driving assistance systems, where drivers must remain ready to intervene. Beyond monitoring for distraction, the system can also verify proper use of assistance systems, identify passengers, monitor seatbelt usage, and perform other interior sensing tasks. Magna began manufacturing the necessary hardware in 2024 and plans for its introduction in models for the Chinese market by October 2025, with a supply agreement announced in 2026 for an unnamed European automaker.
