What's Happening?
Domtar has officially appointed Craig Helgeson as the General Manager of its Nekoosa paper mill in Wisconsin. Helgeson had been serving in an interim capacity for this role since July. He brings 34 years of experience in the paper industry, having worked
at ten different mills throughout his career. Before joining Domtar, Helgeson held leadership positions at Pixelle Specialty Solutions, where he served as General Manager for mills in Chillicothe, Ohio, and Stevens Point, Wisconsin. He holds a degree in Paper Science Engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. The Nekoosa mill is a fully integrated facility that produces specialty papers, printing papers, and substrates for functional coatings, including thermal papers, point-of-sale receipts, labels, and carbonless papers. The site operates three paper machines and one fiber line, with an annual capacity of approximately 168,000 short tons of paper, and currently employs 431 individuals.
Why It's Important?
The appointment of Craig Helgeson to lead the Nekoosa mill is significant for Domtar's operations in the U.S. paper industry. His extensive experience, particularly in plant management, safety, and operational excellence, is expected to be crucial for the mill's continued development in the specialty papers market. Greg Linscott, Vice President of Manufacturing – Paper and Packaging at Domtar, highlighted that Helgeson's background will support the Nekoosa plant's growth in this sector. The Nekoosa mill's focus on specialty papers, such as those used for thermal receipts and labels, positions it within a niche but essential segment of the paper market. This leadership change aims to reinforce the mill's efficiency and product quality, which can impact its competitiveness and market share in the U.S. and potentially international markets for these specialized products. The stability and growth of such manufacturing facilities are vital for local economies, providing employment and contributing to the broader industrial landscape.
What's Next?
With Craig Helgeson now permanently at the helm, the Nekoosa mill is expected to continue its strategic focus on specialty papers. His leadership will likely involve implementing new operational efficiencies and further developing the mill's capabilities in areas like thermal papers and functional coatings. The emphasis on safety and operational excellence, which are Helgeson's strengths, suggests a period of optimization and potentially innovation within the mill. Domtar will likely monitor the mill's performance under his leadership, particularly its contribution to the company's overall paper and packaging division. Future developments could include investments in technology to enhance production processes or expand product offerings within the specialty paper segment, aligning with market demands for advanced paper solutions. The company's commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, as well as providing a supportive work environment, indicates a continued focus on employee development and retention at the Nekoosa facility.
Beyond the Headlines
Helgeson's appointment underscores a broader trend in the manufacturing sector where experienced leaders with a deep understanding of operational intricacies are crucial for navigating competitive markets. His background in managing multiple mills and his expertise in paper science engineering suggest a hands-on approach to leadership that prioritizes technical proficiency and efficiency. This move by Domtar reflects the ongoing importance of specialized manufacturing in the U.S. economy, particularly in industries that require precise production and quality control. The Nekoosa mill's role in producing essential items like point-of-sale receipts and labels highlights the foundational nature of paper products in daily commerce, even in an increasingly digital world. The long-term success of such facilities depends not only on market demand but also on strong leadership that can adapt to technological advancements and maintain high operational standards, ensuring the continued viability of domestic manufacturing jobs and expertise.
