What's Happening?
An American company has initiated the construction of a new nuclear reactor in Wyoming, utilizing liquid sodium cooling technology similar to that of the SNR-300 reactor in Germany. The SNR-300, located in Kalkar, was completed in 1985 but never became
operational due to political and safety concerns, particularly after the Chernobyl disaster. Despite being structurally complete, the reactor never received fuel, and its cooling system, which used liquid sodium, remained active to prevent solidification. The site was eventually sold and repurposed as an amusement park. The new reactor in Wyoming, developed by TerraPower, is a 345-megawatt sodium fast reactor with molten salt storage, capable of increasing output to 500 megawatts. Construction began in April, with completion targeted for 2030.
