What's Happening?
Humane World for Animals, an animal protection organization, has partnered with the international hospitality company Accor to host a roundtable discussion titled 'The menu of the future: Are you ready to serve it?' The event, held at Accor’s internal
F&B Academy in São Paulo, brought together nearly 300 Accor employees to discuss responsible food practices, including animal welfare, waste reduction, and plant-based ingredients. This collaboration follows Accor's announcement in June 2025 of its Corporate Animal Welfare Policy for the Americas. This policy includes guidelines for more responsible practices in its operations and supply chains, such as gradually phasing out shell and liquid eggs from caged hens and prioritizing free-farrowing models for pigs raised for food. Humane World for Animals works globally to eliminate the worst practices of industrial animal agriculture, including intensive confinement, and promotes a shift towards plant-forward food systems.
Why It's Important?
This partnership signifies a growing trend among major corporations to integrate animal welfare and sustainability into their business models, impacting the U.S. food and hospitality industries. Accor's Corporate Animal Welfare Policy for the Americas, which includes the U.S., sets a precedent for other large companies to adopt more responsible sourcing practices. By phasing out products from intensively confined animals, Accor is responding to increasing consumer demand for ethically sourced food, potentially influencing its suppliers and competitors. This shift can lead to improved living conditions for animals in industrial agriculture and a greater availability of plant-based options, benefiting animal welfare advocates and consumers seeking more sustainable food choices. The collaboration also highlights the role of non-profit organizations in driving corporate change and promoting a more humane food system.
What's Next?
Accor's Corporate Animal Welfare Policy will be implemented across its operations and supply chains in the Americas, including the U.S., with planned measures such as the gradual phasing out of caged hen eggs and a preference for free-farrowing pig farming. This will likely lead to increased demand for suppliers who adhere to higher animal welfare standards. Humane World for Animals will continue its global efforts to persuade corporations and governments to eliminate harmful practices in industrial animal agriculture and promote plant-forward food systems. The success of this partnership could encourage other hospitality and food service companies to adopt similar policies, further transforming the food industry towards more ethical and sustainable practices. Ongoing dialogue and collaboration between animal protection organizations and corporations are expected to drive further advancements in animal welfare.
Beyond the Headlines
The collaboration between Humane World for Animals and Accor reflects a deeper societal shift towards greater ethical consideration in food production and consumption. Beyond the immediate impact on animal welfare, this initiative touches upon broader themes of corporate social responsibility, sustainable supply chains, and consumer activism. The move towards plant-forward menus also aligns with environmental sustainability goals, as plant-based diets generally have a lower carbon footprint. This development could accelerate the adoption of alternative protein sources and innovative farming practices that prioritize animal well-being. It also raises questions about the long-term viability of traditional industrial animal agriculture models that rely on intensive confinement, suggesting a future where ethical considerations play an increasingly central role in food industry decisions.
