What's Happening?
The Atterbury, Autograph Collection, has officially opened in downtown Pittsburgh following a comprehensive multi-million-dollar restoration of the historic Fulton Building. Originally constructed in 1906 by architect Grosvenor Atterbury for Henry Phipps,
the building has been transformed into a 300-room hotel by RLJ Lodging Trust. The hotel is now part of Marriott Bonvoy’s Autograph Collection and is strategically located near Market Square, the Allegheny Riverfront, PNC Park, and the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. The Atterbury offers a range of accommodations, including a Presidential Suite, with some rooms providing views of the Allegheny River and PNC Park. The design, led by Christine Shanahan of HVS Design, preserves the building’s architectural features while incorporating elements inspired by Pittsburgh’s cultural and industrial history. The hotel also features an integrated art program with works by local artists, reflecting the city’s steel and riverfront heritage.
Why It's Important?
The opening of The Atterbury Hotel is significant for Pittsburgh’s hospitality and tourism sectors, as it adds a high-end accommodation option in a prime location. This development is expected to attract both business and leisure travelers, boosting local tourism and the economy. The restoration of the historic Fulton Building not only preserves a piece of Pittsburgh’s architectural heritage but also revitalizes the downtown area, potentially spurring further economic development and investment. The hotel’s extensive meeting and event spaces, along with its unique art and cultural offerings, position it as a key venue for conferences, weddings, and other events, enhancing Pittsburgh’s appeal as a destination for large gatherings.
What's Next?
The Atterbury Hotel is set to become a central hub for events and tourism in Pittsburgh. With its strategic location and extensive facilities, the hotel is likely to host a variety of events, from corporate meetings to cultural gatherings. The introduction of 'The Moment,' a music-and-light experience, and the upcoming launch of a weekend brunch at The Drafting Room, are expected to draw both locals and visitors, further integrating the hotel into the community. As the hotel establishes itself, it may influence the development of similar projects in the area, contributing to the ongoing transformation of downtown Pittsburgh.
