What's Happening?
A report by ISSA and Omdia reveals that 68% of cybersecurity professionals find their jobs increasingly difficult, with challenges stemming from being excluded from key technology decisions. The study surveyed 380 practitioners, highlighting issues such
as the involvement of IT operations in cybersecurity and the lack of input in tech decisions, which create barriers to security adoption. The report also notes high levels of work-related stress, with nearly half of respondents considering leaving their roles due to stress.
Why It's Important?
The findings underscore the growing complexity of cybersecurity roles as professionals navigate an evolving threat landscape. The exclusion from decision-making processes can hinder effective security measures, while the stress associated with the job can lead to high turnover rates, exacerbating the talent shortage in the industry. Addressing these challenges is crucial for maintaining robust cybersecurity defenses and ensuring that professionals are equipped to handle emerging threats.
What's Next?
To improve cybersecurity programs, the report suggests increased training for IT and security professionals, investments in resources, and enhancements in governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) and cyber hygiene. Embedding security staff into technology groups and automating collaborative processes between IT and security are recommended to enhance collaboration. These steps could help alleviate some of the pressures faced by cybersecurity professionals and improve overall security posture.
