Marie Latulippe, MS, MBA, RD, Senior Director of Science Programs at the Institute for the Advancement of Food & Nutrition Sciences (IAFNS), notes that while protein is crucial for metabolic adaptation and repair, some dietary protein reaches the lower gastrointestinal tract, where it can be fermented by microbes. This fermentation can produce metabolites with potential implications for health, including inflammatory responses. Conversely, fiber fermentation by gut microbes produces beneficial short-chain fatty acids and other compounds.
