What's Happening?
A South Korean consortium has received Approval in Principle from the American Bureau of Shipping to develop a cargo ship powered by molten salt nuclear reactors. This innovative approach aims to reduce the shipping industry's reliance on fossil fuels
by utilizing smaller, advanced nuclear reactors. The proposed ship could travel at 25 knots and carry up to 15,000 cargo containers. The project is a collaboration between the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering, Samsung Heavy Industries, and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The use of molten salt reactors is seen as a potential solution to the industry's high carbon emissions.
