What's Happening?
Kendrion has further developed its ECONO automation platform into an open solution designed to meet the specific control requirements of machine builders and OEMs. The enhanced platform offers customizable hardware and software, aiming to provide production-ready
control without the need for developing new controllers for each application. Two hardware platforms are available: the embedded IPC ECONO and the FIO Controller, both configurable in terms of processing power and memory. These systems utilize industrial-grade Raspberry Pi module technology for long-term availability and include an option slot for additional hardware functions. The software side offers three variants—ECONO open, ECONO FLECS, and ECONO PLC—all running on a preinstalled industrial-grade Linux operating system, allowing for programming in languages like C++ or Python, integration with automation apps, or CODESYS Soft PLC.
Why It's Important?
This development by Kendrion addresses a critical need in the industrial automation sector for flexible, customizable, and secure control platforms. Machine builders often face challenges in adapting generic controllers to their unique application requirements, leading to increased development time and costs. By offering an open platform with tailored hardware and software options, Kendrion enables OEMs to integrate their specific application and process expertise more efficiently. The inclusion of cybersecurity mechanisms within the platform is also crucial, as industrial control systems are increasingly vulnerable to cyber threats. This approach could lead to faster innovation cycles for machine builders, reduced time-to-market for new machinery, and enhanced operational security in automated environments across various industries.
What's Next?
Kendrion plans to showcase its enhanced ECONO family as an open automation platform at SPS 2026 in Nuremberg from November 24 to 26. This exhibition will be a key opportunity for machine builders and OEMs to evaluate the platform's capabilities and discuss potential applications. Following the launch, Kendrion will collaborate with customers to develop tailored solutions, assisting with application-specific design, integration, and the transition to series production. The company's support from development to series production aims to ensure seamless adoption and implementation of the ECONO platform. Future developments may include further expansion of hardware modules, software integrations, and enhanced cybersecurity features based on market feedback and evolving industry standards.
Beyond the Headlines
The trend towards open automation platforms like Kendrion's ECONO signifies a broader shift in industrial control systems from proprietary, closed architectures to more flexible, interoperable solutions. This move empowers machine builders with greater control over their intellectual property and fosters innovation by allowing them to leverage modern development methods and open-source technologies. The use of industrial-grade Raspberry Pi module technology also highlights the increasing adoption of cost-effective, yet robust, computing solutions in industrial applications. This democratization of control system development could lead to a more diverse and competitive landscape in industrial automation, potentially lowering barriers to entry for smaller innovators and accelerating the development of specialized machinery across various sectors.
