Airbus is advancing its hybrid-electric aircraft technology through the Large Scale Integration Demonstrator of Hybrid Electrical Architecture (LEIA) program. Announced at the Farnborough International
Airshow 2026, the initiative aims to test and integrate non-propulsive electrical systems to improve engine efficiency and energy management while minimizing system weight. The project, backed by €35 million in funding, involves 25 industry and research partners under the Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking. The LEIA program builds on the recently completed SWITCH project, which advanced hybrid-electric propulsion technologies. Key partners like Collins Aerospace, Pratt & Whitney, GKN Aerospace, and MTU Aero Engines are involved in testing powertrain subsystems, which will be evaluated at Airbus' facility in Germany.
