The University of Sheffield's Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) has inaugurated the £54 million Composites at Speed and Scale (COMPASS) facility. This open-access research and development center aims to enhance the UK's aerospace manufacturing
capabilities by enabling high-rate, large-scale composite production. Boeing is the first user of the facility, which is designed to de-risk and accelerate the manufacturing of large aerostructures. The COMPASS facility integrates advanced composites with Industry 4.0 digital technologies, such as closed-loop machine vision and digital twin modeling, to reduce material waste and optimize production cycles. The facility is part of a broader effort to capture a larger share of the global aerospace market, which is expected to demand over 40,000 aircraft in the next two decades.
