What's Happening?
Hanwha Aerospace, through its U.S. subsidiary Hanwha Defense USA, has been selected by the U.S. Army to develop prototypes for its Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC) program. This agreement marks the first time a Korean defense company has secured a U.S. military
program involving a complete weapons system. The deal, awarded through a competitive process under the Army's Other Transaction Authority, has a total cumulative value of $262.9 million, with an initial award of $100.3 million. Hanwha will supply six prototype K9MH systems, a wheeled version of its K9 self-propelled howitzer, with an option for 12 additional systems. The Army plans a four-year period of rapid prototyping, testing, and soldier experimentation to evaluate the systems' performance, reliability, and supportability under realistic combat conditions. This initiative aims to modernize the Army's long-range fires capabilities and develop more mobile and adaptable artillery units, ultimately replacing M777 towed artillery systems in select formations.
