What's Happening?
MassMutual has announced the appointment of Mo McNally as the new Head of Community Responsibility and President & CEO of the MassMutual Foundation, effective January 1, 2027. McNally will succeed Dennis Duquette, who is set to retire at the end of 2026
after a decade in the role. McNally has a strong background in corporate social responsibility, having held various leadership positions within MassMutual over the past ten years. Her current role is Head of Community Engagement and Systems and Vice President of the MassMutual Foundation, where she has been instrumental in developing enterprise impact measurement capabilities, strengthening Foundation governance, and expanding employee volunteer and community programs. Upon assuming her new role, McNally will broaden her responsibilities to include guiding the company’s overall corporate social responsibility strategy, overseeing employee volunteer and giving initiatives, and managing the MassMutual Foundation's administration and grantmaking activities. She will report to Meghan Doscher, MassMutual’s Head of Brand and Marketing.
Why It's Important?
This leadership transition signifies MassMutual's continued commitment to its corporate social responsibility initiatives and its foundation's mission. The MassMutual Foundation, established in 2016, plays a crucial role in increasing financial resilience within communities and fostering community engagement among MassMutual's employees and affiliated financial professionals. The appointment of an internal leader like Mo McNally, with extensive experience in community responsibility and a proven track record within the organization, suggests a strategic move to build upon existing successes and further integrate social impact into the company's core operations. Her expanded responsibilities indicate a holistic approach to corporate social responsibility, aiming to enhance both internal engagement and external community impact. This move is important for stakeholders who value corporate citizenship, as it reinforces MassMutual's dedication to its purpose of helping people secure their future and protect their loved ones, extending beyond its financial products to community well-being.
What's Next?
Effective January 1, 2027, Mo McNally will officially assume her new role as Head of Community Responsibility and President & CEO of the MassMutual Foundation. Following this transition, she is expected to lead the development and implementation of MassMutual's corporate social responsibility strategy. This will involve guiding employee volunteer and giving efforts, and overseeing the MassMutual Foundation's grantmaking activities. The foundation will continue its focus on initiatives that enhance financial resilience in communities and promote community engagement among MassMutual's employees and financial professionals. Dennis Duquette will retire at the end of 2026, concluding his ten-year tenure during which he made significant contributions, including the creation of Live Mutual Week and administering grant strategies that have channeled over $230 million back into the community. McNally's leadership will likely build on these established programs while exploring new opportunities to strengthen communities where MassMutual operates.
Beyond the Headlines
The appointment of Mo McNally to lead the MassMutual Foundation underscores a broader trend in corporate America where social responsibility is increasingly viewed as integral to business strategy rather than a peripheral activity. By elevating an experienced internal leader to this role, MassMutual is signaling a deep commitment to embedding its purpose—helping people secure their future—into its community engagement efforts. This move could inspire other financial institutions to strengthen their own corporate social responsibility frameworks, potentially leading to a more robust ecosystem of corporate-backed community development and financial literacy programs. The focus on financial resilience, particularly in an evolving economic landscape, highlights the critical role that private sector foundations can play in addressing societal challenges. This leadership transition also reflects the growing importance of continuity and internal talent development in driving long-term social impact initiatives, ensuring that foundational values and strategic goals are maintained and advanced.
