AI inference company Baseten has acquired Blaxel, a San Francisco-based startup specializing in secure execution environments, known as sandboxes, for AI agents. The acquisition, first reported by Axios Pro and later announced by Baseten, did not disclose
financial terms. Blaxel's technology focuses on creating isolated virtual machines (microVMs) for each AI agent, which can spin up and resume up to five times faster than competing products. These sandboxes can also remain idle for months at near-zero cost. Blaxel's offerings include Agent Drive, a distributed filesystem for agents, and a networking layer connecting agents to various tools and APIs. Baseten plans to integrate Blaxel's technology to expand its support for code execution, tool use, and session persistence, eventually incorporating it into its inference, storage, observability, and enterprise infrastructure.
