What's Happening?
Kao USA has announced a voluntary recall of specific batches of Oribe's Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo in the United States and Canada. The recall is due to the detection of pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria in certain lots of the product, available in 8.5
oz and 33.8 oz sizes. While the bacteria poses minimal risk to healthy individuals, it could be harmful to those with compromised immune systems, chronic illnesses, or those undergoing surgery. The bacterium is associated with respiratory diseases, urinary tract infections, eye infections, and sepsis. Kao USA is advising consumers to stop using the affected products, which were manufactured between February 21 and February 26, 2026, with lot codes YR010556, YR010566, and YR010576. The company is collaborating with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to manage the recall and is asking retail and salon partners to remove and return the affected products for safe disposal.
Why It's Important?
This recall highlights the importance of stringent quality control in the cosmetics industry, particularly for products that may come into contact with sensitive areas of the body. The presence of harmful bacteria in consumer products can lead to serious health risks, especially for vulnerable populations. This incident underscores the need for manufacturers to maintain high safety standards and for regulatory bodies like the FDA to ensure compliance. The recall could impact Kao USA's reputation and consumer trust, potentially affecting sales and market position. It also serves as a reminder for consumers to be vigilant about product safety and for companies to prioritize consumer health in their manufacturing processes.
What's Next?
Kao USA is conducting further investigations to determine the full scope of the contamination issue. The company is reviewing its manufacturing practices to prevent future occurrences and is working closely with the FDA to ensure all affected products are safely removed from the market. Consumers are encouraged to report any adverse effects from using the product and can contact Kao USA for replacements or inquiries. The outcome of these investigations may lead to changes in industry standards and practices, influencing how similar products are manufactured and monitored in the future.
