The European Innovation Council-supported ProFuse project has concluded, announcing significant advancements in the cultivated meat sector. The project, coordinated by Israeli company ProFuse Technology, focused on developing technologies to improve the efficiency
and reduce the cost of producing mature muscle tissue. Key outcomes include the creation of a non-genetically modified (non-GMO) bovine myoblast cell line, known as PROFUSE-B8, which allows for continuous cell division without needing repeat sourcing from an animal or genetic engineering. Additionally, the project developed and refined muscle-growth supplements, PROFUSE-S1 and its second-generation version PROFUSE-S2, designed to accelerate the maturation of muscle cells. These supplements were tested in 3D setups to mimic factory conditions more closely. Collaborations with cultivated meat producers, such as SuperMeat, demonstrated that these technologies can reduce production costs by speeding up cell maturation and increasing muscle yield, thereby lowering the cost per kilogram of cultivated meat. The project's findings were published by the European Commission’s CORDIS research service.
