What's Happening?
The Amarillo Little Theatre (ALT) has announced additional showtimes for its production of 'Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors' due to overwhelming demand, with original dates selling out rapidly. The play, a comedic adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic gothic
horror novel, runs from October 15 to 25 at the Adventure Space. Managing and Artistic Director Jason Crespin describes it as a fast-moving, campy, and soap-operaesque take on the story, featuring modern pop-culture references, quirky wordplay, and a 'bitesexual' Dracula. The cast includes Dakota Warren as Dracula, Christeen Bernet as Dr. Westfeldt, Michael Newman as Mina and Van Helsing, Caleb Cordes as Harker/others, and Kaeclyn Tenorio as Lucy/others. The production is rated for ages 13 and up due to mild violence and Mel Brooks-style innuendo, with a runtime of approximately 90 minutes without intermission. ALT is also partnering with the Coffee Memorial Blood Center for a blood drive on October 13.
Why It's Important?
The rapid sell-out and subsequent addition of showtimes for 'Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors' highlight the strong community engagement and demand for live theatrical performances in Amarillo. This success indicates a vibrant local arts scene and the public's appetite for innovative and entertaining adaptations of classic stories. For the Amarillo Little Theatre, this not only translates into financial success but also reinforces its role as a cultural hub, attracting new audiences and fostering local talent. The partnership with the Coffee Memorial Blood Center further demonstrates the theatre's commitment to community involvement, leveraging its platform to support vital local services. This trend of successful local productions can inspire other regional theaters and contribute to the broader cultural landscape by making theater accessible and appealing to a wider demographic.
What's Next?
Tickets for the newly added 11 p.m. showtimes on October 17 and 23 will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Monday, available online or by calling the ALT Box Office. Given the previous rapid sell-out, these additional tickets are also expected to be in high demand. The production will continue its run through October 25, offering more opportunities for the community to experience this comedic twist on a classic. The blood drive in partnership with the Coffee Memorial Blood Center is scheduled for October 13, from 4 to 7 p.m., in the Terk Lobby of the Allen Shankles Mainstage, providing an opportunity for audience members and community residents to contribute to a local health initiative while engaging with the theatre.
Beyond the Headlines
The success of 'Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors' reflects a broader cultural trend of reinterpreting classic narratives through a contemporary lens, often incorporating humor and modern sensibilities. This approach can make traditional stories more accessible and relevant to new generations, bridging the gap between historical literature and current entertainment preferences. The gender-bending casting, with actors portraying multiple characters and some in drag, challenges conventional theatrical norms and promotes inclusivity and creative expression within the performing arts. This not only adds a unique comedic element but also encourages audiences to engage with themes of identity and performance in a playful manner. Such productions contribute to the evolution of theater, demonstrating its adaptability and capacity to remain a dynamic and engaging art form.
