What's Happening?
Nintendo has announced that its mobile game, Mario Kart Tour, will be shutting down. The game, which was launched on September 25, 2019, for iOS and Android devices, will end its service on September 29, 2026, at 11 PM PT. Unlike some other mobile games,
such as Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, which received a final 'Complete' version, Mario Kart Tour will not have an offline version available post-shutdown. The sale of in-game currency, rubies, has already ceased, but players can use their existing rubies in the Spotlight Shop, Mii Racing Suit Shop, and Coin Rush until the service ends. Additionally, the automatic renewal of the Mario Kart Tour Gold Pass subscription has been stopped, and new subscriptions are no longer available. However, players with existing subscriptions can continue to enjoy the benefits until the service ends.
Why It's Important?
The shutdown of Mario Kart Tour marks a significant moment in the mobile gaming industry, as it reflects the challenges and lifecycle of mobile games. This decision impacts the game's community, which has been active since its release in 2019. The end of service for Mario Kart Tour may influence Nintendo's strategy in the mobile gaming market, potentially leading to a reevaluation of how the company approaches mobile game development and monetization. For players, the shutdown means the loss of a popular game that offered a portable version of the classic Mario Kart experience. This move could also affect Nintendo's brand loyalty among mobile gamers, as they may seek alternative games or platforms.
What's Next?
As the shutdown date approaches, players will need to decide how to use their remaining in-game resources. Nintendo may provide further updates or support to assist players during this transition. The company might also focus on developing new mobile games or enhancing existing ones to fill the gap left by Mario Kart Tour. Additionally, the gaming community will be watching to see how Nintendo's mobile strategy evolves in response to this closure, particularly in terms of new game releases or updates to existing titles.
