What's Happening?
Artist Lauren Halsey recently transformed the Hollywood Bowl into an immersive 'funk opera' as part of her ongoing project, 'emajendat.' This one-night event, supported by LA Phil, featured collaborations with artists such as Anderson .Paak, Flea, The
Alchemist, and Erykah Badu. The entire venue served as a canvas for Black futurist themes, incorporating a technicolor stage, mini-golf, basketball installations, large-scale art, and custom costumes. Halsey's work aims to document the character of Black Los Angeles, transmuting its visual language into something universal yet specific. The project, which first launched at London's Serpentine Gallery in 2024, explores themes of space, place, and the conflation of past, present, and Afrofuturity. Halsey emphasizes the comprehensive nature of the production, including costume design, staff shirts, wayfinding, and signage, all contributing to a 'total artwork.'
Why It's Important?
Lauren Halsey's 'emajendat' project is significant for its innovative approach to art and its engagement with Black cultural history and futurism. By transforming a major venue like the Hollywood Bowl into an interactive, immersive experience, Halsey challenges traditional gallery spaces and brings fine art ambitions to a broader audience. The project's focus on documenting Black LA's character and transmuting it into a universal language contributes to a re-examination of historical narratives and methods of storytelling. This initiative highlights the power of art to create new worlds and question who gets to write history, fostering a dialogue about identity, space, and time within the context of Black experiences. The collaboration with prominent musicians also underscores the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary art and its potential to bridge different creative fields.
What's Next?
Halsey views the Hollywood Bowl event as a 'proof of concept' for future iterations of 'emajendat.' She plans for the project to grow and expand over time, with the inventory of material objects and structures continuing to develop. The artist envisions these objects traveling to subsequent events, allowing for further expansion and design. Halsey expressed hope that the project could evolve into something akin to a fair by its fifth year, emphasizing the liberating aspect of its unknown future. This indicates a long-term vision for 'emajendat' as a continuously evolving platform that will likely continue to explore themes of Black futurism, community, and the redefinition of artistic spaces, potentially reaching even wider audiences and incorporating new elements in its ongoing development.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate spectacle, Halsey's 'emajendat' project delves into profound ethical and cultural dimensions. It challenges the conventional understanding of history by asking who has the authority to write it and what new methods can be employed to tell these stories. By blending ancient Egyptian pyramids with contemporary Los Angeles street scenes and poetry from Watts, Halsey creates a unique historiography that transcends linear time, offering a 'funkified' cosmic perspective. This approach encourages a re-evaluation of how cultural narratives are constructed and consumed, promoting a more inclusive and imaginative understanding of the past and future. The project also highlights the importance of community and collaboration in artistic creation, demonstrating how collective creativity can transform public spaces into sites of cultural reflection and celebration.
