What's Happening?
The National Basketball Association (NBA), Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), and American Express have announced a global expansion of their long-standing partnership. This multiyear agreement builds on American Express's role as the Official
Payments Partner for both leagues, aiming to provide enhanced access, experiences, and value to American Express Card Members and NBA fans worldwide. The expansion includes international activations across the NBA, WNBA, and USA Basketball, as well as the NBA G League and NBA Take-Two Media. American Express will serve as the Presenting Partner for select NBA Houses, offering immersive fan experiences, and an Associate Partner for select NBA Global Games, including upcoming games in Mexico City, Paris, and Manchester. The partnership also deepens American Express's involvement with the WNBA and establishes a new collaboration with USA Basketball, offering Card Members exclusive access to events and presale tickets.
Why It's Important?
This expanded partnership signifies a strategic move by both the NBA and American Express to tap into the growing global appeal of basketball. For American Express, it provides a significant platform to engage with a diverse international audience, offering exclusive benefits that can attract new Card Members and enhance loyalty among existing ones. For the NBA and WNBA, the collaboration with a global financial services company like American Express helps to further internationalize their brands, increase fan engagement, and drive revenue through global events and merchandise sales. The focus on international activations and global games underscores the leagues' commitment to expanding their footprint beyond the U.S., leveraging basketball's universal language to connect with fans across different continents. This also creates new opportunities for players and teams to gain international exposure and for the sport to grow its global fan base.
What's Next?
Following the NBA Tip-Off activations for the 2026-27 season, American Express and the NBA plan to launch a program with NBA ID, the NBA’s free membership program. This initiative will allow eligible American Express Card Members to link their cards to NBA ID to unlock special perks. Throughout the season, American Express will continue to offer engaging experiences for basketball fans and Card Members, including priority access at marquee events, merchandise discounts on NBAStore.com, and presale tickets for major events like NBA All-Star, the NBA Draft, and the AT&T WNBA All-Star Game. Additionally, the partnership will include in-game perks and experiences for NBA 2K27, and a Jersey Assurance program for fans purchasing jerseys with an American Express Card. These initiatives are designed to maintain high levels of fan engagement and provide continuous value to Card Members.
Beyond the Headlines
The global expansion of this partnership highlights a broader trend in sports and entertainment, where major leagues are increasingly seeking to forge deep, multi-faceted relationships with global brands. This goes beyond simple sponsorship, aiming for integrated experiences that enhance fan engagement and drive commercial growth on an international scale. The emphasis on digital integration, such as linking American Express cards with NBA ID, reflects the evolving landscape of consumer interaction, where seamless digital experiences are paramount. Furthermore, the partnership's inclusion of the WNBA and USA Basketball underscores a commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within sports, recognizing the growing importance and influence of women's basketball and national team programs. This strategic alignment could set a precedent for how other major sports leagues approach global brand partnerships, focusing on comprehensive fan value and international market penetration.
